A Jesus for the Atheists: A Panzy?

The fact is, the reason why Jesus is compelling is not that he was a sissy pacifist, but rather that he was overwhelmingly mighty, but, to accomplish a particular deed, he set aside his aggressiveness and took whatever was thrown at him. He could have overthrown the gates of Hades by force, but only by laying down his arms did he not only defeat Hades but also freed its prisoners.

When a soldier throws himself on a grenade to save his fellows, all except a handful of Ayn Randian objectivists applaud his valor. Here, to save his fellows it would have done no good to charge out of the trench when the grenade tumbled in and kill those who tossed the grenade. Here, only self-sacrifice could achieve the goal, but it did not follow that the soldier was soft and tender in spirit. You see, it depends a great deal on the circumstances and what one wants to achieve. There is a time for aggressiveness but there is also a time for meekness. The problem is knowing exactly which time it is. (Ecc. 3)

A Review of Antony Flew’s “God and Philosophy.”

This is not your normal review. I set aside my copy of Flew’s “God and Philosophy” to re-read for the purposes of writing this review and it has disappeared. 10 to 1, a certain other adult in the house ‘put it where it belong’ which is why I can no longer find it. So, I […]

The Christian and Harry Potter and Dumbledore: A Christian changes his mind?

Not too long ago I posted an article talking about Rowling’s outing of Dumbledore as a gay man.  In it, I expressed disappointment and wondered what the point and purpose of this unnecessary revelation was.  The battle still rages and I have got to say that many Christians are just being absurd.  Not only with […]

NBC’s Heroes and a Christian Response … a warm up.

NBC’s television show “Heroes” is pretty good, though I have to say that I agree in many respects with this guy who has grown tired of some of the plot elements.  I still have more hope, though, and I especially like watching deep philosophy play out on the TV screen.  In particular, I enjoy watching […]

Herr Professor on the Ropes with Watson

Apparently my most bitter barb of all for the Professor is that he failed to comprehend the salient points of the post that started it all. I will remain silent on his more lengthy… rant? but focus on this quote because of course my contention is that his comments were poisoned at the well and […]

Evolutionary Origins of Religion:

As I was skimming the web this evening I came across this site reviewing Hitchen’s “God is not Great.” I didn’t spend much time on the blog so I don’t know the gent’s background.  I’m going to comment on a few things he said as a springboard since I have heard it any number of […]

My own loose ends, Watson and Herr Professor

I breezed into Herr Professor’s lair to see if there was anything I ought to respond to.  I too enjoyed the exchange, though I wonder if he ever really appreciated the points I was making.  Things could go round and round, but that is what I have a discussion forum for. At risk of setting […]
