Last night I learned that Detroit has put together an ‘income tax’ much like the Federal and State income tax. In other words, it isn’t property tax. (I heard it described as a ‘slum tax’). We wonder why Michigan has been in recession for so long… well, one doesn’t have to look too hard. The last thing that Detroit needs is another reason for people to flee- and I assure you, and I doubt you need to be convinced- a person who pays this income tax will receive absolutely nothing for its dollar.
The real insult to injury, the real hilarious thing, is that Detroit has managed to charge an income tax even for nonresidents! If you don’t even live in the city they’re going to charge you! Unbelievable! If you work in the city, you pay income tax to Detroit, although at a slightly lower rate.
Here’s an idea: instead of extracting every last drop of expendable income from an ever diminishing pool of already hurting people, why not create conditions that will encourage the city to flourish. With more people, you can tax them at a lower rate and still generate more revenue. I’m just saying.
Before anyone gets on my case about it, I am a native of the Detroit area and all of my family still lives there. I consider Michigan the promised land… but it is things like this that continue to keeping away. The state is a mess and has been for awhile. As this income tax thing shows, the people of the state continue to pursue the very types of strategies that put them in the predicament they’re in in the first place.
So, to my Detroit friends… you made your bed, now lie in it.
