This idea of telling only the PC part of the story and leaving the reader clueless is the oldest trick in the book, but a very high percentage of us are unaware or only vaguely aware of this spin, probably because something hurts inside when we find out someone we once trusted has betrayed us and we hope against hope it isn't so. We need to inure ourselves to this reality so that we can cope. May I suggest fogiving the offender in our hearts but not falling for it the next time. The Italians have a wonderful proverb: to trust is good, to mistrust is better. Our Brazilian colleague Olavo de Carvalho has graciously given Laigle's Forum translation rights to an eye-opening article of his on the ways the press has spun some of the biggest events in the 20th century so that the truth is left absolutely standing on its head. The article is entitled "The weakening of the American soul." Please check it out when it comes out (we're shooting for tomorrow afternoon, Jan 29). Hello sntjohnny!
