Eugenics the Logical Consequence of Evolutionary Theory Part One

About ten days ago I posted an entry arguing that neither secularism or science are value neutral and gave the example of the science book at the center of the Scopes Monkey Trial which- portraying itself as science- advocated for eugenics.  A commentator (by my estimation) missed the point of my post and focused on the implication that evolutionary theory logically necessitates the acceptance of eugenics.  I said at the time, and I say now, that I do not personally believe that this is the case.

Nonetheless, it is an undeniable fact that at the turn of the last century … continue reading...

Does the planet need saving?

Reflecting on the global warming/environmental propaganda being delivered to my son in elementary school, I was left shaking my head.  Whatever it means to ‘save the planet’ it can’t possibly mean ‘save the planet.’

The planet isn’t going anywhere.  The planet doesn’t care if it is polluted.   In fact, ‘polluted’ is a term that is only meaningful relative to we human-folk.  Indeed, ‘save the planet’ can, on the best construction, only mean something to the effect, “save the habitats that we consider important to life.”  Presumably, with all the expressed fear that the ocean levels will rise, etc, what we … continue reading...

Scientism: The Atheist’s Religion of Faith

I’m getting some hits regarding scientism but don’t actually have any posts dedicated to it.  I thought if I’m going to be looked at on the subject I should make at least a few deliberate comments.  They should not be construed, however, as exhaustive.

Scientism can refer to a few different ideas and I denounce them all. 🙂  It goes without saying that people who exhibit ‘scientism’ would not use the word to describe themselves and they will resent the suggestion that they are as described.

Because this post is pretty lengthy here is a list of the headings in … continue reading...

Christianity and UFOs and Space Aliens, an Apologist’s Perpective

I’ve seen this guy on the news lately talking about some space craft being sent or already sent that has the goal of identifying planets that might have intelligent life.  This gent is utterly convinced there are, suggesting it would be arrogant and hubris to think we are alone in the universe.  This is a fairly common sentiment among atheists (I don’t know if this guy is an atheist) dovetailing into weird arguments like “There can’t be a God because why would he care about us, we’re like ants to him.”  This would be like an ant in an ant … continue reading...

Creationists Lurking Around Every Corner

I’m not really in the mood to discuss evolution right now but I feel it is my job to keep my devoted readers informed about such things.

One of arguments I’ve made in my ministry is really an observation:  in the hard core atheistic naturalistic community, if you don’t come to the same conclusions as they do on the science you are one of those dastardly, anti-intellectual, irrational creationists.  (For full effect, say that aloud, scratch yourself, and then at ‘creationists’ spit on the ground.  That will give you the attitude).

If you don’t seem dastardly, are very intellectual, and … continue reading...

Literary Apologetics Key to Turning the Tide

Hat tip to Charles for pointing this article out to me.

Recently ChristianityToday had an excellent article on the use of science fiction to communicate a distinctly secular and atheistic world view.  If you are a Christian that cares for the state of the Church today and our modern challenge, you should read the article.

The article correctly says:

… viewers don’t leave movies such as Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Hancock, X-Men, and Contact—or television programs such as The X-Files or Heroes—scratching their heads in confusion. We are intrigued, but

Lincoln on Slavery Applied to Abortion: Irony in Electing a Pro-Choice Black President

Hat tip to Eric Redmond for posting this article on Facebook from John Piper’s website.  Here is what was quoted from Lincoln:

You say A. is white, and B. is black. It is color, then; the lighter, having the right to enslave the darker? Take care. By this rule, you are to be slave to the first man you meet, with a fairer skin than your own.

You do not mean color exactly? You mean the whites are intellectually the superiors of the blacks, and, therefore have the right to enslave them? Take care again. By this rule, you

Abortion and Slavery: Obama as the Anti-Lincoln

Right there on the Drudge Report was a picture of Obama posturing in front of the Lincoln Memorial.  It doesn’t take much to see the relevance.  Lincoln was instrumental in liberating black people from slavery in this country.  150 years later, a black person is president.  The spin doctors aren’t content to leave it at that.  The effort is on to try to relate Obama to Lincoln’s style, intellect, etc.  But Obama is no Lincoln.

The prevailing argument in the hundred years leading up to the Civil War was this simple question:  is a black person a human person, entitled … continue reading...

NBC Heroes, Faith, Philosophy, Christianity

So last night was the season opener for the NBC series Heroes.  Am I the only person left scratching his head?  I had hoped that the series would start making sense again but instead it seems to have become even more convoluted.  I want to enjoy the show but there is just way too much going on to keep track of from week to week.

In last night’s back to back episodes, one of the characters, Nathan Petrelli, credits the saving of his life to God and suggests at one point that perhaps he and his brother (Peter) could become … continue reading...

PETA Sex Education Commercial Tells the Truth Just not the Right One

Have you seen on the news the PETA sex education commercial?  On Fox News it’s getting hammered for being grossly inappropriate.  Possibly Youtube agrees, since it looks like it has been pulled.  That means I have to explain it, I reckon.

Basically, the commercial has a mother and father (gots to give them credit for arriving at that arrangement) encouraging their daughter to have sex with anything that ‘has a pulse.’  When the girl protests that she might get pregnant, the parents tell her not to worry, after all, there are places for unwanted children- forgetting I guess, that some … continue reading...

Global Warming and Evolution: Intimidation the New Step in the Scientific Method

I must at the outset admit that I haven’t delved into the data that I am told substantiates the view that the earth is steadily warming. That is one reason why I have not said anything about Global Warming. I shall say that here in Wisconsin we just came off of a mighty cold spell with snows as late as April, and last year was about the same. As Wisconsin is part of the globe, I feel I can anecdotally chime in that to this point I am skeptical about the Global Warming argument. Moreover, there clearly are several different … continue reading...

Power to the Experts! Down with Intelligent Design! To arms, to arms!

So one of the biggest public events in the Intelligent Design debate is upon us.  Ben Stein’s Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed is going to be out in theaters today.  Browsing through anti-ID commentary you get a sense of the heat this movie is taking.  It is a small taste of the heat this movie is about.  The stated concerns range all over the place, but the underlying premise that seems to have them pulling out their hair is that such popularizations of the debate are bad, very bad, because the American public are, well, morons.  Why can’t people just be … continue reading...

You have a moral obligation to abort your Down Syndrome Baby, your Cerebral Palsy Baby, your Spina Bifida Baby, your Cystic Fibrosis Baby

Didn’t you know that? It is a moral obligation. That is what this embryology professor is reported to have said in this news article here. Here is a quote:

“In my opinion, the moral thing for older mothers to do is to have amniocentesis, as soon during pregnancy as is safe for the fetus, test whether placental cells have a third chromosome #21, and abort the fetus if it does. The brain is the last organ to become functional.”

The article continues with some pretty interesting points. The professor objects that he is just trying to start discussion. One … continue reading...
