Dubbed as the 'Hermit Kingdom' because of willfully walling itself off, either metaphorically or physically, from the rest of the world.
After the First Sino-Japanese War and the Russo-Japanese War, Korea was occupied by Japan from 1910 to 1945. Korean resistance groups known as Dongnipgun (Liberation Army) operated along the Sino-Korean border, fighting guerrilla warfare against Japanese forces. Some of them took part in allied action in China and parts of Southeast Asia. One of the guerrilla leaders was the communist Kim Il-sung, who later became the first leader of North Korea.
The Korean War sparked the division of the once united Korean peninsula. The north was taken by the North Koreans lead by Kim Il Sung, Chinese and Soviet forces. While the south was stood by the Democratic Republic of Korea, US Commonwealth, and United Nations forces. The DMZ (demilitarized zone) is the meeting point, demarcation of both Koreas, and is situated in the peninsula at 38th parallel north latitude of Earth's equatorial plane boundary.
