Dorothy Sayers on Gay Marriage? The Other Six Deadly Sins

This post has Christians in mind who support traditional marriage.  Gay marriage proponents and non-Christians are not in view.  Read the following with this in mind.

Recent developments on the ‘gay marriage’ front, and developments over the last decade, reminded me of an essay written by that insightful Christian critic Dorothy Sayers way back in the 1940s.  Here is the relevant portion:

The Other Six Deadly Sins

Perhaps the bitterest commentary on the way in which Christian doctrine has been taught in the last few centuries is the fact that to the majority of people the word immorality has … continue reading...

Announcing: Online Literary Apologetics Conference

I am proud to announce that Athanatos Christian Ministries will be hosting its first annual online apologetics conference this May.

http://onlineapologeticsconference.com/

The theme for the conference is ‘literary apologetics.’  Potentially, future conferences will tackle some other brand of communicating or defending the Gospel through the arts.  ‘Literary apologetics’ is, obviously, using the written word to carry out that endeavor.  Notable examples are C. S. Lewis, G. K. Chesterton, and Dorothy Sayers, to name a few.

The purpose of the conference is to issue a call to Christians in the arts to express their faith through them and issue a call … continue reading...

A Well Informed Zoroastrian Could Explain Mere Christianity

In my last post I made a reference to Dorothy Sayer’s assertion that a ‘well informed Zoroastrian’ could- or at least in principle, should- be able to explain what Christianity is all about.  This was in context of my pursuit for a book that lays out in simple terms just what the historic orthodox Christian faith is.  That pursuit exists because it is not uncommon to run across nonChristians who have rejected Christianity who seemingly have precious little understanding of just what it is they are rejecting.  Frankly, you run across Christians who don’t understand what they’re accepting.  Well anyway, … continue reading...

Highly Recommended: Peter Kreeft’s Handbook of Christian Apologetics

This isn’t a formal review by any means but I did recently complete this book and thought it was so fantastic it deserved a quick mention. The book was suggested to me in my quest for a ‘basic Christianity’ book to give to skeptics that would lay out in easy to understand but documented detail precisely what Christianity is, the kind of thing that Dorothy Sayer’s ‘well educated Zoroastrian’ could produce. Kreeft’s Handbook is not that book. (It is, however, the book I was looking for to serve as the apologetics text book for the certificate of apologetics for my … continue reading...

Presentation Text on Apologetics and the Arts and Literature

Below is the text of the speech I gave recently at my event in Wisconsin. I don’t typically write out my presentations. I usually work off an outline and as it happened I ended up setting aside the text completely and working off of memory. The presentation that I actually came had the same general points but was presented a bit differently. Also, due to time constraints I skipped some points in the actual presentation that appear in the text. It seemed worthwhile to make this available for those who wanted the best of all worlds.

It is also useful … continue reading...

The Daily Kos or something… A Gay? Dumbledore and the Street Prophet

I was cruising the net today and found that I had been described as a loon on this site here: http://starwoman.streetprophets.com/story/2007/11/1/154133/383 The domain is streetprophets.com but the image says it is a Daily Kos community. If someone wants to explain to me the relationship I’d be open to it but I’m not going to go looking.

So, anyway, the article cites a blog entry I wrote some time ago when all this broke here: http://sntjohnny.com/front/archives/103

After saying “Tied for honorable mention among Nutter Harry Potter Homophobes are these winners, who have some real problems discerning reality from fantasy and are … continue reading...

Austin Cline reacts to the church producing atheists

While I have glimpsed in a few places atheistic reactions to my assertion that the church itself is producing atheists, I had yet to see any real formal comment on it until today, when a member of my forum pointed me to Austin Cline’s entry on it located here. It so happens that I know of Mr. Cline and have had a little interaction, but for the record I don’t believe he understands that ‘Anthony Horvath’ is also ‘sntjohnny.’ That interaction has a little in common with his entry here. In word, I think he is again being quite … continue reading...
