First Fruit Giving not Hand Me Down Left Overs

A couple of days ago I posted a fairly long essay on why Christians should donate money.   The essential point was that the people who provide the services that Christians value- pastors, DCE’s, teachers, missionaries, evangelists, apologists, etc- are workers who deserve their wage.   In other words, they aren’t charity cases.  We ‘donate’ to them because there is no structural coercion to make us.  There is no government standing by with a club to extract the taxes and no police man standing by to make sure that you actually paid for the item or service you are enjoying.   There … continue reading...

Extreme Make Over: Home Addition, Christianity shown up by Capitalists

I posted a long time ago on this and I was thinking of it again while watching the show tonight.   I came in late, so I didn’t get the full context.  It seemed as though there was a single father, a Christian, taking care of his sons on his own.  As usual, his house was a dump, but ABC came in and gave him something awesome.  Here is my problem:  why are Christians doing this dozens of times a day all over the place?

Do not do tomorrow what you know is good to do today.

And by ‘good’ I mean in the theological, moral sense.

Over the last five years or so, the sntjohnny household has endured various sorts of troubles that were truly unpleasant.  To keep it in context, I should add that at least very little was ‘tragic.’  That has not been lost on me.  One of the things that has come out of the experience that I am glad to have is a better appreciation of the nature of generosity.  I have always seen generosity as a logical fruit of faith in Christ but I never understood or appreciated the fact that … continue reading...
