Or 'case fatality rate', is the proportion of deaths within a defined population of interest. Case fatality rate measures the severity of the disease that causes death. For example, among a total of 200 patients with disease A, 20 of them died from the same disease within 30 days; the 30-day case fatality rate = 20/200 ? 100 = 10%. It is similar to that of mortality rate, incidence rate.
A recent study of COVID-19 cases in the United States estimated a mortality rate of 10% to 27% for those ages 85 and over, 3% to 11% for those ages 65 to 84, 1% to 3% for those ages 55 to 64 and less than 1% for those ages 20 to 54.
These numbers shouldn't be taken as the inevitable toll of the virus, however.
