It is a little more powerful than your average flu. However, it just got its 'pandemic' status from the World Health Organization basing from their “Pandemic Intervals Framework”. And indeed, it spreads more effectively between people than flu.
The actual threat to it is because it is a new strain of virus, there is no vaccine to protect against it. No medications. No known practice to aggressively treat it. Only 'Nonpharmaceutical Interventions' like response strategies, delaying the spread, disinfection, isolation/quarantine of the virus are the ways that people can do to fight it, unlike flu who has been around for the longest time.
Things are going about the direction I figured they would weeks ago. Two weeks ago, I wondered how our liberties would fare when laid up against the coronavirus. This was pre-Italy, mind you. The writing, as it were, was on the wall.
At this point, the question of whether or not we are going to go draconian is moot. The only question now is of degree. What I would have preferred was an evidence based approach which zeroed in on the most vulnerable communities–the old folks.
