It is the visceral experience of another person's thoughts and feelings from his or her point of view, rather than from one's own. Essentially, it is putting yourself in someone else's place/position/feeling.
Empathy facilitates prosocial or helping behaviors that come from within, rather than being forced, so that people behave in a more compassionate manner. This means having empathy doesn’t necessarily mean we’ll want to help someone in need, though it’s often a vital first step toward compassionate action.
