The state of New York is located in the Northeastern United States. New York was one of the original Thirteen Colonies that formed the United States. With an estimated 20 million residents in 2019, it is the fourth most populous state. In order to distinguish the state from its city with the same name, it is sometimes referred to as New York State.
Regarding COVID-19, as of April 11 data, current cases are at a total of 181,144 (higher than the current total in Spain or Italy) and deaths of 8,627. In New York City, the COVID-19 death rate is at 6%, higher than in most countries.
The reason why there is a large number of cases in New York is probably that there's so much testing that is being done. If you test more, you find more, and if you find more, you test even more. It is likely that more tests, and more tests per population, are performed in New York than elsewhere in the United States, and that the New York rate stacks up favorably to countries with aggressive testing programs, such as Iceland and South Korea and Germany, but comparative information is sketchy.
In New York City, data suggests there is a very male outbreak; substantially more men have been diagnosed, hospitalized and have died, in keeping with data seen in other countries.
