Widely known as the American Civil War, was the greatest war in American history. 3 million fought - 600,000 paid the ultimate price for freedom. And a war for freedom it was. The desire for freedom traveled deeper than the color of skin and farther than the borders of any state.
The election of Abraham Lincoln as President, caused eleven states to secede from the Union beginning with South Carolina and form the Confederate States of America.
Prominent figures in the warlike Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, Gen. Irvin McDowell, Gen. Thomas Jackson, George B. McClellan, Gen. John C. Frémont, Gen. David Hunter, Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, Gen. Joseph E. Johnston, Gen. Ambrose E. Burnside, and many more, have been documented very well throughout history.
The conflict ended in 1865 with the death of 620,000 soldiers of the 2.4 million who fought the war.
